Phyto-management; curing soil with industrial crops, utilising contaminated and saline land for industrial crop production
ClosedCode: 28923 | Identifier Code: HORIZON-JU-CBE-2023-R-01 | Programme name: 23015 | Start submission calls: 26/04/2023 | End submission calls: 20/09/2023
Phytoremediation, the use of plants to remove contaminants from the environment and in particular soils, has become an important approach in ecological engineering.A relatively new area of phytoremediation is phytomanagement in which non-food high biomass yielding crops are used to reduce and control risks arising from soil pollution, while making a profitable and sustainable use of resources possible by extracting contaminants and valorising marketable biomass.the cultivation of industrial crops in contaminated soils offers great environmental benefits and new social and economic opportunities for primary producers, broader society and the entire bio-based value system.Furthermore, this topic addresses phytoremediation techniques for salt-affected soils to better understand the potential of selected high-yielding industrial crops to restore soil fertility and ecosystem services, including in view of the reconversion to future uses (agriculture, recreation etc). -
Production of safe, sustainable, and efficient bio-based fertilisers to improve soil health and quality
ClosedCode: 28920 | Identifier Code: HORIZON-JU-CBE-2023-IA-02 | Programme name: 23015 | Start submission calls: 26/04/2023 | End submission calls: 20/09/2023
Fertilisers are critical for the EU agriculture and the current market situation for fossil and mineral fertilisers, together with a general increase of input costs, could have significant impacts on EU farmers and their productivity.Bio-based fertilisers have the potential to make the food system more sustainable.Polymeric materials and plastic coatings, used to optimise the release properties of fertilisers, remain a significant problem in terms of environmental pollution and risks to human health. -
Small scale biorefining in rural areas
ClosedCode: 28916 | Identifier Code: HORIZON-JU-CBE-2023-IA-01 | Programme name: 23015 | Start submission calls: 26/04/2023 | End submission calls: 20/09/2023
Small-scale biorefineries are attractive, especially to rural stakeholders, because they may not require a high level of initial investment in comparison to large-scale facilities and, therefore, often provide a quicker return on investment. In addition, technology providers benefit from this model because of its high replication potential across Europe.

To get there, they pledged to reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. This will create new opportunities for innovation and investment and jobs. It includes research and innovation actions related among others, to transport, industry, energy, buildings’ ecological efficiency, nature and health protection, boosting global climate action.

Projects should fall under at least one of the two areas of intervention:
Intervention area: “Space for Nature”
Any project aimed at improving the condition of species or habitats through areabased conservation or restoration measures falls within the eligible scope of the intervention area “Space for Nature”. This may include, for example, projects for restoring or improving natural or semi-natural habitats, or habitats of species, both within and outside existing protected areas. This may also include projects for creating additional protected areas (or improving the biodiversity focus and contribution of existing protected areas), ecological corridors or other green infrastructure, projects testing or demonstrating new site management approaches, projects acting on pressures, etc.Intervention area: “Safeguarding our species”
Any project aimed at improving the condition of species (or, in the case of invasive alien species, reducing their impact) through any relevant activities other than area-based conservation or restoration measures falls within the scope of the intervention area “Safeguarding our species”. Considering the broad range of threats that may act on species in addition to the degradation of their habitats, such projects may apply to a wide range of relevant measures, spanning from hard infrastructural works to awareness raising of stakeholders.
