  • Development of innovative technologies for direct seawater electrolysis

    Closed

    Code: 32450 | Identifier Code: HORIZON-JTI-CLEANH2-2024-01-03 | Programme name: 27323 | Start submission calls: 18/01/2024 | End submission calls: 17/04/2024

The expectations stemming from the aforementioned expected outcomes create a set of challenges to be overcome in order to produce electrolysers of various scale of power for distributed hydrogen production, performed without other than basic mechanical filtration or purification of seawater. In order to understand and tune reaction mechanisms describing the desired catalytic activities and the overall stability and selectivity, special attention needs to be paid to in-depth experimental, computational and theoretical insight into the mechanistic pathways and properties of the electrode-electrolyte interface under operating conditions. The major effort should, therefore, focus on one hand on the improvement of the hydrogen electrode to work in this harsh environment and on the other hand on the improvement of the selectivity towards the oxygen evolution at the anode electrode, as well as, to the durability issues stemming from both corrosion processes and catalyst (and membrane when applies) poisoning.

Different studies and projects (e.g. HYUSPRE, HYSTORIES) have assessed the feasibility of storing hydrogen in porous media geological formations. However, a comprehensive assessment of the risks (eg. production of certain corrosives compounds and other impurities) associated with the different groups of microorganisms in specific underground formations needs to be studied in detail, considering the boundary conditions specific of each site (e.g., temperature, pressure, pH, rock’s chemical composition, salinity, etc.). Related impact on rock properties (porosity, permeability, mechanical properties).
Overall this topic focuses on investigation of microbial interaction for underground hydrogen porous media storage.

  • Clinical validation of biomarkers for diagnosis, monitoring disease progression and treatment response

    Closed

    Code: 32404 | Identifier Code: HORIZON-JU-IHI-2024-07-03-singe-stage | Programme name: 23667 | Start submission calls: 16/01/2024 | End submission calls: 22/05/2024

Technology development or improvements to existing technologies may be required to progress these biomarkers to clinical validation. For example, there are many novel and highly innovative technologies in development (e.g. imaging, artificial intelligence (AI), omics markers, phage-based diagnostics in multiple formats among others) and their further development and validation would be a necessary element for validating their detected biomarkers in the clinic.

Furthermore, different healthcare actors (e.g. academics, clinicians, patients, health technology developers and regulators) may have different definitions and expectations on the utilities of biomarkers, and there is a need for an aligned methodological framework for scaling up the clinical validation of candidate biomarkers.

  • Development of evidence based practical guidance for sponsors on the use of real-world data / real-world evidence

    Closed

    Code: 32397 | Identifier Code: HORIZON-JU-IHI-2024-06-02-two-stage | Programme name: 23667 | Start submission calls: 16/01/2024 | End submission calls: 10/10/2024

This topic focuses on the development of evidence based practical guidance for sponsors on the use of real-world data / real-world evidence.

The use of real-world evidence to support decision making on the safety of medicinal products is already well established. Much knowledge exists within individual sponsors on these use-cases, but, to date, this has not been leveraged to develop practical guidance which could act as a baseline for future submissions.
To leverage the learning from individual use cases and facilitate the efficient use of RWD/RWE for regulatory, HTA, and payer submissions and to inform healthcare decision-making, structured, evidence-based, and practical guidance is needed.

  • Support healthcare system resilience through a focus on persistency in the treatment of chronic diseases

    Closed

    Code: 32395 | Identifier Code: HORIZON-JU-IHI-2024-06-01-two-stage | Programme name: 23667 | Start submission calls: 16/01/2024 | End submission calls: 10/10/2024

The scope of this topic is to improve treatment persistency among people living with chronic diseases. According to the MEDI-VOICE project funded by the European Commission, non-adherence to medication accounted for approximately 200 000 deaths annually in the European Union, and according to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report from 2003, around 50 % of people living with a chronic disease do not adhere to the prescribed medication. From a recent analysis by Kvarnström et al (2018), the major barriers for adherence to medication range from a lack of disease knowledge by the patient to logistical barriers like availability of medication and price (see list below), ultimately leading to discontinuation of medication.

  • Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) through R&D in novel and existing antimicrobials

    Closed

    Code: 32389 | Identifier Code: HORIZON-JU-GH-EDCTP3-2024-01-04-two-stage | Programme name: 29117 | Start submission calls: 18/01/2024 | End submission calls: 12/09/2024

This topic focuses on Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) through R&D in novel and existing antimicrobials. Tackling AMR requires multi-modal interventions, the collaboration of many disciplines and countries. Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) could further reduce the burden of drug-resistant infection. The WHO defines AMS as a coherent set of integrated actions which promote the responsible and appropriate use of antimicrobials to help improve patient outcomes across the continuum of care. Responsible and appropriate use of antimicrobials includes prescribing only when needed, selection of the optimal drug regime, drug dosing, route of administration and duration of treatment following proper and optimized diagnosis. These actions are complemented by the implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC), enhancing water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and optimizing vaccination coverage.

AMR is one of the Global Health issues which can hugely benefit from the employment of the One Health approach. AMR transmission is a critical global problem affecting humans, the environment, and animals. Hence, proposals need to have the One Health approach at their centre.

Furthermore, the availability and access to existing antibiotics is also a challenge. In particular, efforts to ensure equitable access to antibiotics in LMICs that experience the highest burden of AMR, are needed.
