The visit builds on the Hub’s Open Call for Local Good Practices, launched in November 2025, which recognised exemplary local solutions in cultural heritage that contribute to the green, digital, and social transformation of the society. Lisbon’s “Memories of Lisbon” was among the 10 selected practices. This project addresses the risk of social isolation among older residents by engaging vocational education students to record their life stories and to produce 2D animations that bring personal testimonies to life. The initiative exemplifies Lisbon’s strategic commitment to using culture, heritage, and digital innovation to foster social cohesion, inclusion, and sustainable urban development. Since 2015, it has engaged more than 500 residents across 13 neighbourhoods through participatory memory workshops that strengthen community identity, promote intergenerational exchange, and preserve local heritage. Now expanding through the geo-referenced E-Museum Memories of Lisbon, a permanent, georeferenced digital platform, developed by the Lisbon City Council and integrated in its site. The Lusófona University and its experts in the fields of sociomuseology and education provide scientific oversight for the technical processing of the testimonies available on the platform. By exploring ways to safeguard heritage through a distinct oral-history-based methodology, the Lisbon Peer-Learning Visit will offer a crash course in intergenerational citizen engagement and empowerment through cultural heritage, multi-level governance and partnership models, and ways to reinforce inhabitants’ sense of belonging. It is a chance for meaningful exchanges among peers already active in cultural heritage as well as for those eager to transform their heritage initiatives and policies into more sustainable, innovative, and inclusive ones. Participating in a peer-learning visit means discussing policies and projects, top tips, pitfalls, and local experiences, in a private and friendly expert environment. Selected participants will get useful information and ideas for improving or initiating local projects, as well as transferring some of the presented practices.
