Horizon Europe is the European Union (EU) funding programme for the period 2021 – 2027, which targets the sectors of research and innovation. The programme’s budget is around € 95.5 billion, of which € 5.4 billion is from NextGenerationEU to stimulate recovery and strengthen the EU’s resilience in the future, and € 4.5 billion is additional aid.
In line with the European Green Deal priorities and in particular the farm to fork strategy, and in support of the African Free Trade Area, the successful proposal will contribute to the African Union (AU)-EU High Level Policy Dialogue (HLPD) on Science, Technology and Innovation, and its priority on Green Transition (and the respective R&I partnerships on Food and Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change and Sustainable Energy), as well as to the implementation of the short-term actions outlined in the working document of the AU-EU Innovation Agenda, aiming to translate R&I efforts into tangible business, development and employment opportunities in Africa and Europe.

The consortium selected for funding is encouraged to cooperate with actors such as the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC).
If eligible for funding, legal entities established in all African Union Member States* may exceptionally participate in this Coordination and support action as a beneficiary or affiliated entity. * “African Union member states” includes countries whose membership has been temporarily suspended.
Due to the scope of this topic, legal entities established in all African Union member states* are exceptionally eligible for Union funding.*

In addition to the minimum number of participants, consortia must include at least five independent legal entities established in Africa.
