Horizon Europe is the European Union (EU) funding programme for the period 2021 – 2027, which targets the sectors of research and innovation. The programme’s budget is around € 95.5 billion, of which € 5.4 billion is from NextGenerationEU to stimulate recovery and strengthen the EU’s resilience in the future, and € 4.5 billion is additional aid.
Coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove forests cover less than 2% of the sea surface, but are home to at least 25% of known marine species and support up to 40% of the world’s fish species. However, these ecosystems have suffered significant degradation in recent decades due to anthropogenic pressures (pollution, overfishing, illegal practices, deforestation, etc.) and climate change (warming, acidification, rising sea levels, etc.).
Although they provide valuable ecosystem services, their management remains largely fragmented and usually focuses on each of them individually, without long-term monitoring. Where they coexist, the three ecosystems are ecologically linked and their joint protection can enhance the overall effectiveness of interventions.
However, integrated land-sea management is difficult due to gaps in knowledge, understanding of ecological connectivity, spatial data and the involvement of local communities (IPLCs). Currently, only 18% of the coastlines where these ecosystems interact are formally protected, and areas managed by local/indigenous communities are often not recorded, despite covering significant areas globally.
In particular, proposals should:
100%
Expected EU contribution per project: €6.00 million
If projects use satellite-based earth observation, positioning, navigation and/or related timing data and services, beneficiaries must make use of Copernicus and/or Galileo/EGNOS (other data and services may additionally be used).
The following additional eligibility criteria apply: due to the specific challenge of this topic, in addition to the minimum number of participants set out in the General Annexes, consortia must include, as beneficiaries, at least three independent legal entities, each established in a different Least Developed Country and/or Small Island Developing State.
All international organisations are exceptionally eligible for funding.
