Horizon Europe is the European Union (EU) funding programme for the period 2021 – 2027, which targets the sectors of research and innovation. The programme’s budget is around € 95.5 billion, of which € 5.4 billion is from NextGenerationEU to stimulate recovery and strengthen the EU’s resilience in the future, and € 4.5 billion is additional aid.
Generative AI (GenAI) holds the potential of creating in Africa a rich ecosystem of transformative solutions and practical applications addressing the specific societal challenges and opportunities most of the countries are facing.
Proposals should demonstrate how Generative AI can support Africa by enhancing agriculture through data-driven optimisation of crops and resources, improving healthcare with disease diagnosis, outbreak prediction and accessible telemedicine while addressing gender and racial inequalities, strengthening infrastructure and urban planning via efficient energy, water and waste management, disaster recovery and digital twins, and advancing digital skills and learning with personalised education, multilingual content and local-language AI tools for rural and low-resource communities, all enabled by reliable connectivity.
