Horizon Europe is the European Union (EU) funding programme for the period 2021 – 2027, which targets the sectors of research and innovation. The programme’s budget is around € 95.5 billion, of which € 5.4 billion is from NextGenerationEU to stimulate recovery and strengthen the EU’s resilience in the future, and € 4.5 billion is additional aid.
The topic of this Call implements the co-programmed European Partnership on ‘Zero Emission Waterborne Transport’ (ZEWT). Throughout this call, projects must have the goal to address the current state of the art and the scatter of emissions between different types of LNG-powered engines.
This Call is under the Destination ‘’Clean and competitive solutions for all transport modes’’ which addresses activities that improve the climate and environmental footprint, as well as competitiveness, of different transport modes.
The Call promotes operational data on methane slip from existing engine installations, as well as a comparison.
Activities may include additional measurement campaigns of methane slip where necessary and duly justified, addressing the complexity of different engine types at different load factors (including highly dynamic loads) and operational profiles. Additionally, they are aiming to lead, to a better understanding of the parameters involved in order to develop the most efficient abatement strategies through ICE improvement and/or post-treatment technologies. Such activities are expected to go significantly beyond existing measuring campaigns and provide distinctively new knowledge.
Project(s) will develop and demonstrate such strategies and the corresponding technologies for better performing ICEs and/or after treatment systems which virtually eliminate methane slip in all conditions in refitted or newly built vessels. By developing technologies also suitable for retrofitting this action will also have an impact on the existing LNG-powered fleet whilst ensuring that negative impacts on energy efficiency (potentially resulting in higher CO2 emissions) and on the suppression of pollutant emissions (in particular NOx) are avoided.
A repetition of measurements already made by producers of large marine engines will not be funded.
Up to 60% of the eligible costs applying both to members and non-members of the partnership, except for non-profit legal entities, where the funding rate is up to 100% of the total eligible costs.
